Narimatsu・Nakamura Research Team

Our team offers classes on epidemiology at the Graduate School of Health Innovation, including Research on Epidemiology and Seminar on Epidemiology! Join us in our mission to advance the field of epidemiology! Our research activities are closely related to these classes, intending to promote innovative epidemiological research.

In particular, we are committed to working with our students to meet the challenges of integrating science and technology, industrial policy, and health care beyond the traditional boundaries of epidemiology and prevention.

Dr. Narimatsu is also the Director of the Cancer Prevention and Control Division at the Kanagawa Cancer Center Research Institute (Dr. Nakamura is a visiting researcher) and the Chief of the Department of Genetic Medicine at the Kanagawa Cancer Center (concurrently serving in a cross-appointment system). The Cancer Prevention and Control Division has been responsible for the Regional Cancer Registry of the Kanagawa Prefecture for over 30 years. In addition, since 2016, we have been conducting the Kanagawa Prospective “ME-BYO” Cohort Study, which serves as the Kanagawa site of the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study (J-MICC Study), which is a genomic cohort study.

We also actively engage in collaborative research not only with Kanagawa Prefecture but also with Keio University, Tokai University, Yokohama National University, Yokohama City University, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, and many other academic institutions, as well as many private companies.

In close collaboration with these institutions, we advance our research activities by leveraging our research assets in epidemiology and public health as an intellectual foundation.

Research Themes

Kanagawa Prospective "ME-BYO" Cohort Study

The Kanagawa Prospective "ME-BYO" Cohort Study (ME-BYO Cohort) is a genomic cohort study to clarify the interaction between people's constitution (genomic factors) and their lifestyle habits to clarify the evidence for the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as cancer. The evidence provided by the ME-BYO cohort will also contribute to the "ME-BYO" improvement that Kanagawa Prefecture has set. The ME-BYO cohort is also expected to develop nationally by participating in the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study (J-MICC Study) as a collaborative research project. Since the opening of the Graduate School of Health Innovation, we have also been conducting joint research with the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization, and our research is making steady progress.

There is one thing we tell our study participants honestly. It will take decades to see the most significant results we hope to achieve from this research. For this reason, we cannot promise that we will be able to return results that will be of any immediate benefit to current participants. On the other hand, we have received comments from participants that they hope this research will help the younger generation, including their children and grandchildren, live healthier and wealthier lives, which would be a great gift.

The ME-BYO cohort is a research project to plant the seeds of health in the "future" and nurture them with our collaborators.

☆NEW

KISTEC has uploaded a YouTube video featuring Dr. Fukuda, a leading researcher and collaborator in the field of microbiome research, and the Director of the ME-BYO Industry Division of Kanagawa Prefecture. The interview discusses the possibilities and approaches of 'ME-BYO science', which aims to create new value and is closely related to the healthy ageing.

ME-BYO & ME-RISE Project

The ME-BYO & ME-RISE project is one of the innovative challenges that our research team is attempting. We are challenging advanced approaches with the keyword "Future Map to ME-BYO (the Japanese translation of this phrase sounds like ME-BYO and ME-RISE)".

Specifically, this project will utilize the assets of cohort studies in a new way to verify how the innovative seeds in health care can be implemented by the public and policymakers as soon as possible. A key focus of this project is the approach to promoting behavior change among participants. We aim to formulate evidence in preventive medicine (especially primary prevention) and integrate it into policy by conducting multifaceted effectiveness verification and focusing on "exit = policy making" at the time of research design.
Thanks to the tremendous support of local governments and health care providers, we are steadily implementing scientific and technological innovations in local communities in close collaboration with them, using epidemiological methods, our specialty, to measure indicators and accurately verify effects.
