Introduction

My overall research focuses on digital lifestyle markers obtained through wearable devices and smartphone applications, and their associations with health outcomes. My main research interest is sleep epidemiology and the longitudinal associations between sleep as a behavior and incident disease and mortality outcomes. I am also interested in healthy ageing with the aim of identifying lifestyle choices and lifestyle patterns (measured through wearable devices and daily questionnaires) that may predict healthy longevity. The work in our research group is based on traditional epidemiological methods as well as machine learning and deep learning.

In addition to my work with SHI, I am affiliated with the Precision Health group, Department of Bioengineering, the University of Tokyo and with the Department of Clinical Sciences Malmö at Lund University in Sweden.

Research Theme

Sleep

The main objective of my sleep research is to identify population-level and individual-level associations between sleep as a behavior and adverse health outcomes. Recently, owing to the availability of genetic, proteomic, and metabolomic markers, I am hoping to identify biological pathways that can explain why aberrant sleep patterns in otherwise healthy individuals increase the risk of cardiometabolic diseases and all-cause mortality.

Healthy Ageing

The primary objectives of our healthy ageing project are to identify lifestyle patterns and biological mechanisms of healthy longevity. We have two healthy ageing cohorts with participants aged 80 years or older: one smaller feasibility study (30 participants followed for 3 months) and one larger cohort study (150 participants followed for at least one year). Collected data includes wearable device data, daily lifestyle questionnaires, clinical biomarkers, clinical tests, and proteomic markers. From 2024, the larger cohort will also have whole genome sequencing and metabolomic markers.

Metabolic Syndrome Prevention Using Mobile Health

This project focuses on the prevention of metabolic syndrome using data from Japanese office workers. Data includes annual health check-up information, wearable device data, and questionnaires.

Message to the Prospective Students

Please contact me if you have an interest in conducting research that focuses on sleep or digital health, disease prevention with a focus on lifestyle factors, or if you are interested in using exploratory biomarkers to identify potential biological pathways of healthy ageing. I am very much looking forward to hearing from you.
