Transforming Evidence intoPower for SocietyWhile working in the pharmaceutical industry, I encountered a major challenge: even when evidence exists, it is not always applied in real-world settings.Clinical trials may demonstrate efficacy, but outcomes vary depending on patientsʼ daily lives and the healthcare delivery environment. I realized that healthcare is shaped not only by medicine but also by the society in which it operates. Wanting to study these issues systematically, I decided to enroll at SHI.At SHI, I engage in discussions with classmates from diverse backgrounds, including physicians, nurses, government officials, and professionals from private companies. Through these discussions, I learned that the very definition of a problem changes depending on oneʼs standpoint. I came to understand that solving public health challenges requires more than simply finding solutions̶it involves aligning different values and shaping them into forms that can be implemented in society.Balancing full-time work with graduate studies is not easy, but I am supported by online courses and a flexible advising system. I find it particularly appealing that my research is guided in a way that respects professional experience and practical relevance. The behavioral health sciences I have learned at SHI directly enhance my current work. By not only demonstrating the effectiveness of medications but also asking “Why do people change their behavior?” I can now design strategies with behavior change in mind.My current research focuses on the relationship between the quality of physical activity and psychological stress. In the future, I hope to integrate behavioral science with pharmacological effects to promote “sustainable treatments” for lifestyle-related diseases on a broader societal scale.Being a working professional in graduate school is certainly challenging. However, the learning experience has allowed me to redefine the meaning of my work. I feel the value it brings is far greater than I had imagined.Bringing Science toPublic Health and SocietyDuring my undergraduate studies, I majored in medical life sciences and engaged in research at the genetic and molecular levels. Wanting to contribute to healthcare from a position closer to society, I chose to pursue public health. I was drawn to SHI because it allows me to make use of my scientific background and because of its strong emphasis on English education. SHI includes classmates with diverse backgrounds, including those with substantial professional experience and international students. During my job hunting , I received generous support, such as interview preparation and career guidance. Being exposed to different perspectives has broadened my worldview, and the relationships I have built have become an important part of my learning. After enrolling, I began working at a clinic as a medical office administration. Courses in healthcare management and health economics connected directly with my daily work in medical claims, allowing me to experience the meaningful link between academic study and practical application. I also challenged myself with classes taught in English and have seen real improvement in my language skills. For my research, I am working on a cost-effectiveness analysis of medications for intractable diseases. Through studying health economics and health technology assessment, I hope to apply this knowledge in the pharmaceutical industry starting this spring.Although I did not have a clearly defined goal when I first enroll in SHI, the diverse curriculum and warm, supportive environment helped me find the path I wanted to follow. After enrolling at SHI, she began working part-time at a clinic as a medical office administration . While still in the master course, she proceeded with her job hunting and is scheduled to join a pharmaceutical company this spring.
